LyttonNet is now in it's fourth year of serving low cost High Speed Internet to the Fraser Canyon near Lytton and we are continuing to expand our network coverage and capabilities in 2010.
We currently have over 200 residential and business customers. LyttonNet serves wireless (WIFI) internet to our Subscriber and Token customers from 12 towers, covering more than 56km (35 miles) of the Fraser Canyon near Lytton as well as Botanie valley, Fountain Valley, and over 5km (3 miles) of the Thompson River East of Lytton.
Our most recent construction was a repeater at 14 mile to serve residents of the Fraser Canyon and Fountain Valley between Lytton and Lillooett. This repeater is powered by solar and wind energy.
Several improvement projects are underway at present. These include:
- a mini repeater to serve the Jade Springs area (under construction) COMPLETE!
- permits, design and construction of a remote wind and solar powered repeater to serve Siska and South to Kanaka Bar Update: Fabrication complete
- we are performing path checks to extend the network East to Gladwin
- installation of new server cabinet and remote access switching to our servers
- installation of two new towers to replace existing masts at the Village Office
- upgrade to our main server to support the new RG Nets "RXG" operating system-COMPLETE!
- negotiation with Telus and investigation of other alternative providers to purchase upgrades to our backbone intenet service. Our existing backbone connection is limiting our capacity and an upgraded service is needed to reduce slowing during peak periods.
Things don't just happen! A big thank you is in order for the dedicated volunteers of Lytton Area Wireless Society and many others who continue to work long hours so we can all 'get connected'. Read "About Us" for a more detailed description of what Lyttonnet is as who is behind it.
LyttonNet is a community resource - it is your project. Every subscription dollar goes to keeping the network running and extending it for others. If you find deficiencies in the system, would like various features, would like to extend the service area, by all means get involved! The strength of LyttonNet lies in the our collective effort to improve and preserve what we have. Call Lyttonnet at 250-455-2695 if you have questions about your service or would like to volunteer.
